A few years ago, winning at SEO meant stuffing keywords into headings, building backlinks, and hoping your page loaded fast enough. That era is over. In 2026, search engines — and the AI systems that increasingly answer questions before users even click — care deeply about something most business owners have never heard of: structured data.
Platform choice feeds directly into this. Not all platforms make structured data easy. And "easy to use" doesn't always mean "good for search."
What Structured Data Actually Does
Structured data is code you add to your site — specifically in JSON-LD format — that tells Google, Bing, and AI crawlers exactly what your page contains. Not just "here's a webpage," but "here's a local business, here are its services, here's a FAQ, here are its reviews."
When Google understands your site's structure with that kind of precision, several things happen:
- You become eligible for rich results — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, and enhanced listings in search
- AI tools like Google's Search Generative Experience and Bing's AI answers are far more likely to cite your business
- Your content gets indexed more accurately, meaning you show up for the right searches
The businesses that understand this in 2026 have a significant advantage over those still treating their website as a digital brochure.
The Platform Question
Here's where it gets practical. Which platform you build on determines how much control you have over your structured data — and your SEO ceiling.
Squarespace
Squarespace generates some basic structured data automatically (Organization, WebPage, BreadcrumbList). For many small businesses, that's enough to get started. The problem is the ceiling: you can't inject custom JSON-LD schemas without workarounds, you can't fully control how each page's metadata is structured, and the platform optimizes for ease-of-use in ways that sometimes conflict with what Google actually wants.
Squarespace is a reasonable choice if you need something live fast and SEO isn't your primary growth channel. But if you're competing in a local market where every advantage matters — say, web design in San Diego — it will hold you back.
WordPress
WordPress gives you full control, and with the right plugins — Rank Math or Yoast SEO — you can configure structured data at a granular level per page. Both are excellent; here's the honest distinction:
- Yoast SEO has been around longer, is more conservative in its defaults, and integrates cleanly with most themes. It's the trusted standard.
- Rank Math offers more structured data schema types out of the box (including LocalBusiness, FAQ, HowTo, and Article schemas), a more intuitive setup wizard, and a free tier that competes directly with Yoast Pro. For new builds in 2026, it's our recommendation.
The tradeoff with WordPress: it requires maintenance. Core updates, plugin updates, security patches. A neglected WordPress install is a liability. A well-maintained one is a machine.
Custom Code
This is what we build on. A custom-coded site has no plugin overhead, no theme conflicts, and no platform imposing its own SEO logic on top of yours. JSON-LD is written by hand, precisely tailored to each page. Every meta tag, every canonical URL, every structured data schema is intentional.
The downside is obvious: it requires a developer. You're not going to update your own structured data in a visual editor. But for businesses where search visibility is a real competitive advantage — law firms, medical practices, home services companies — the control is worth it.
What Matters More Than Platform
Here's the thing most SEO conversations miss: platform is a multiplier, not the foundation. The foundation is content quality, page speed, and genuine relevance to what your customers are searching for. A mediocre WordPress site will outrank an excellent Squarespace site if the WordPress site loads faster, answers questions more directly, and has real backlinks from real sources.
In order of impact, here's what actually moves the needle in 2026:
- Page speed — Google's Core Web Vitals are a direct ranking factor. Slow sites rank lower, full stop.
- Mobile performance — Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your mobile experience is poor, your rankings reflect it.
- Content that answers real questions — Long-form, specific, original content outperforms thin keyword-stuffed pages.
- Structured data — Gets you into rich results and AI citations.
- Backlinks — Still important, still hard to fake sustainably.
- Platform choice — Enables or limits everything above.
The Local SEO Edge
For San Diego businesses, local SEO deserves its own mention. LocalBusiness structured data — your address, phone number, hours, service area, and aggregate review score — directly feeds Google's local pack, which appears above the regular search results for "near me" queries. This is prime real estate.
Combined with a verified and complete Google Business Profile, a site with proper LocalBusiness JSON-LD gives you the best possible chance of appearing in that local pack. Most of your competitors haven't done this. That's the opportunity.
Platform is a strategic decision, not just a design preference. If you're not sure whether yours is helping or limiting your search visibility, we're happy to take a look.
