Custom Website Design
Custom website design,
explained in plain English.
No jargon and no sales pitch. Here is what a custom-built website actually is, what it does better, and when a platform like WordPress or Squarespace serves you better instead. Because sometimes it does.
What a custom-built website actually is
Most websites start from something pre-made. A theme gets purchased and adjusted. A page builder assembles the layout. A stack of plugins bolts on the features. Plenty of good sites are built that way, but everything the theme and plugins carry comes along too, whether your business uses it or not.
A custom-built website starts from a blank file instead. Every page is designed and coded by hand around your business: your services, your clients, and the questions they arrive with. No theme, no page builder, no plugin stack. The finished site contains exactly what it needs to do its job, and nothing else.
BURDS NERDS has been building websites this way in San Diego since 2014. It is the approach behind most of the sites in our web design portfolio, and it is our flagship offering because, for a typical small-business site, it is simply a stronger technical foundation.
The practical benefits
None of this is theoretical. Building from scratch changes how the site behaves every day, in ways you and your visitors can feel.
Fast pages
Nothing loads that is not doing a job, so pages open quickly, even on a phone with a weak signal.
Fewer moving parts
There is no collection of third-party plugins, each updating on its own schedule, underneath your site.
Less to break
With fewer components, there are fewer ways for something to fail, and fewer surprises on a Monday morning.
Cleaner structure
The code underneath is organized and readable, a structure search engines read easily.
No plugin or template bloat
You are not carrying features a template shipped with that your business will never use.
Easier long-term maintenance
A simpler site is a simpler site to care for: there is less to check, patch, and update every month.
Built around your business
The layout follows what you offer and how clients choose you, instead of squeezing your business into a template.
One honest note: custom code is not a magic ranking boost. It is a stronger base to build on. When built properly it gives you a cleaner, faster, simpler technical foundation, and what you publish on top of it still matters most.
When custom is the right call, and when it is not
A custom-built website is the right call for most service businesses whose website has one job: look credible, load fast, explain the work clearly, and turn visitors into inquiries. It fits owners who would rather have one person handle the technical side than spend their evenings managing updates, plugins, and layouts.
When another platform fits better
WordPress is a great fit when you need a built-in editor, frequent blogging, a large content library, or specific plugins. If you plan to publish every week and want to do it yourself, that built-in editor earns its keep.
Squarespace is a good fit when you want a simpler, lower-maintenance site you can manage yourself, with less technical complexity and a smaller budget. For some businesses, that is exactly the right amount of website.
We build on both, and we will tell you plainly which one matches how you plan to run your site. If search visibility is driving the decision, our guide to choosing the right platform for SEO walks through the tradeoffs in more depth.
What a custom-built website costs

Common questions
It means your website is designed and coded from scratch for your business instead of assembled from a pre-made theme, page builder, or plugin stack. The finished site contains only what your business needs, which keeps pages fast, structure clean, and long-term maintenance simple.
It is a stronger foundation, not a guarantee. Custom code gives a cleaner, faster, simpler technical structure that search engines read easily, but it is not a magic ranking boost. Rankings still depend on your content, your reputation, and your competition. Every website we build includes a technical SEO foundation as the starting point.
A custom-built site does not come with a built-in editor, so most clients pair it with a care plan: Custom Site Care starts at $49 per month for monitoring, backups, and minor fixes, and $99 per month adds up to 30 minutes of content and code updates each month. If editing your own pages regularly is important to you, WordPress or Squarespace may be the better fit, and we build on both.
Packages start at $2,995 for a Launch Site, $4,995 for a Growth Site, and $7,500 for a Custom Site. Every quote is confirmed in writing before work begins, and all starting prices are public on our pricing page.
Every build includes three months of site care. After that, Custom Site Care plans run $49 to $199 per month and cover uptime, SSL, and security monitoring, backups, minor fixes, and, on higher tiers, monthly updates and SEO reviews. There is no plugin stack to babysit, so there is simply less to maintain.
